A new class of prescription weight-loss medications called GLP-1 receptors have been shown to help people lose a significant percentage of body weight when paired with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Examples of GLP-1 receptors that are FDA-approved for weight loss include Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide). Other medications, such as Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), are approved for diabetes but used off-label to help patients lose weight.
However, these drugs aren’t for everyone. They’re typically appropriate for people with obesity (a BMI greater than 30) as well as those with a BMI greater than 27 and one or more weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol. And it’s also important to consider potential downsides, such as cost and side effects (like nausea, bloating, and indigestion).
